ABOUT THE TEXT
Composed in the eighth century by the Indian bodhisattva Shantideva, this text, the Bodhicharyavatara, continues to be treasured by Buddhists of all traditions. This text is a timeless work of wisdom, the longevity of which is due to the quality of its verse as much as to its wisdom. His Holiness the Dalai Lama considers it a seminal influence in his life and work and repeatedly stresses the benefits of its study.
Please join us as we begin to understand the selfless ideals of the
bodhisattvas, those special beings who achieve enlightenment yet remain here
focused not on themselves but on helping others. As we become inspired to
cultivate the six perfections: generosity, ethics, patience, zeal,
meditative concentration, and wisdom; within ourselves, we will gain a deeper
understanding of our limitless ability to be kind towards others. As our
motivation to help others increases, so much closer do we become to
Buddhahood.
